Democrats quickly took to Twitter: „You fired the guy you just told you was going to kill you,“ tweeted former President Bill Clinton. „This election is not about politics but it’s about ethics — so start acting like it!“
Others called for the Senate Intelligence Committee to investigate the matter. A Democratic aide to Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia called for the probe. „It’s obvious Mr. Trump’s campaign made an ethical decision to have Mr. Comey go and allow this disgrace and this terrible episode to go on to happen,“ Senator Mark Warner told reporters Wednesday, calling the firing „an outrageous attack on the FBI director’s independence, integrity and professionalism.“

The House Oversight Committee said it planned to ask the Justice Department for documents and testimony, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein said she would also start a probe. Feinstein said she was encouraged by Trump’s announcement about the dismissal, but „I’m certainly not willing to do anything before I know exactly what’s going on.“
Trump called Comey „a great American patriot“ and said the former FBI director had done more „to protect the president than any member of Congress has done in the entire history of this country,“ as Trump told reporters on Air Force One before heading to California.
„James Comey better hope that there are no ‚tapes‘ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!“ Trump said in the tweet.
A former FBI agent said Trump should step down. „There’s a great irony here — the guy that fired him is the one who won the popular vote in a landslide,“ said the agent, who requested anonymity to speak freely in the midst of the controversy surrounding Trump. „And the man who fired him is the person who’s doing everything in his power to obstruct the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, including the leak of thousands of classified emails on his private server while President.< zurück
